Rest. What is it good for?

There’s a national epidemic of exhaustion, and Christmas hardly seems the solution. In fact, it may be that we’re approaching the point where we don’t want to even think about it because it represents the cup flowing over – and not in a good way. Do you sigh hard when you think of the holiday? Does it irk you that I’m even bringing it up before Halloween, for goodness’ sake?

We typically seek rest because we’re tired, but what if we saw rest, sleep, quiet alone time with the Lord as training? What if we sought peace and quiet and downtime for the sake of fueling up? If you’re going to be Santa, you’re going to have to spend 364 days in the workshop making toys. If we’re going to be an effective vessel of grace (Rom 9:23), have a Word for others in season and out of season (2 Tim 4:2), and acknowledge the Lord in all you do so He’ll make your path straight (Prov 3:5-6), we’re going to have to train your spirit to listen to His. We’re going to need the full scope of our faculties, and we’re going to have to fill our bag with the goodies of His Word all year long.

To get excited about overflowing with His grace to celebrate the most exciting event of all of history – the Emanuel breaking into the broken world to heal, reveal, and give hope and life eternal and abundant – you need the kind of navy seal, Rocky Balboa, eye of the tiger, Olympian training that only quiet, prayer, and rest can provide.

Rest. Read. Celebrate. Pray. Train hard.
