Celebrating with Wine or Whine?

Celebrating with Wine or Whine?

By | Celebrating with Wine or Whine? | No Comments

I confess, I’m a reforming (not yet fully reformed) class A whiner. Even at my worst it wasn’t usually in the annoying droopy, drippy voice that can grate on the nerves, but when life presses in and squishes me (time, energy resources), I can complain energetically.

I have precious friends and colleagues all around me that deal with life-squishing in the grand tradition of winemaking: when they get squeezed, they don’t make wine but will drink it or the like until the squishing doesn’t feel so bad.

Whether it’s whine or wine, complaint or other coping, it winds up in the same place: life-killing, instead of life-healing and life-giving. Then to compound the problem we condemn each other for the killer coping method of choice, adding a healthy dose of shame to the mix.

If only we could see that what we’re ALL doing is chomping down on bitter roots of different colors, turning AWAY from the life-giver. Turning away from His life-giving Words and Truth, His promises, His compassion, His plan, the acknowledgement of our blessings, and the overwhelming treasure of love He has for us – undeserved, but overflowing.

If only we could be reminded that this world and the people in it are catastrophically broken, but He is not, and He promises to make us more than overcomers, to personally restore and make us strong, firm and steadfast. Rom 8:37;1 Pet. 5:10. He is, after all, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort. 2 Cor. 1:3-4.

Let’s help each other celebrate that. And complain, when we hurt, to He who is able to do more than you or I could ever ask or imagine. Eph. 3:20.
